Uitgeest

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in the 11th century as a spirit settlement on a shore near the transition with the wetter peat area. The oldest buildings disappeared in the 14th century due to the advance of the wet peat.

From the beginning of the 15th century Uitgeest consisted of four neighborhoods, namely the Kerkbuurt, Westergeest and - outside the village - Assum (south) and Dorregeest (north). The buildings concentrated around the church in the 19th century and ribbon constructions came along the parallel Westergeest / Langebuurt, Middelweg and Hogeweg. By the construction of the railway (1867-'69) the village grew south to the station. After the Second World War, Uitgeest was extended to the west of the Geesterweg and due to the construction of a residential area on the south side (circa 1995) Uitgeest now borders Heemskerk.
