Twisk (municipality of Noorder-Koggenland)

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in the 11th century as peat reclamation on the creek that runs from Abbekerk to Medemblik. The village was first mentioned in 1311 and received in 1414 as part of the 'Stede Abbekerk' (Abbekerk, Twisk, Midwoud and Lambertschaag) - purely administrative - city rights. The Bennemeer on the southwest side was dry ground in 1633-'43. Rich farms were created through the good grazing grounds. Because the allotment is not perpendicular to the extraction axis, farms and residential houses are also placed at an angle to the road. With the exception of a small post-war residential area, no bowl formation has occurred in this ribbon village. Twisk is a protected village.
