The voorm. (Herv.) Grote Kerk in Hoorn

betekenis & definitie

(Kerkplein 33) [4] is a cross-church with service spaces in the eastern arm, and with a tower of two sections with octagonal lantern and narrowed needle spire. This neo-Renaissance church was built in 1881-83 according to plans by C. Muysken, after the old neoclassical church (1844) was burned down in 1878.

That church was already a replacement for the medieval church (dedicated to Cyriacus) that caught fire in 1838. For the new tower, Muysken used the hull of the tower from 1844. The steeple he designed was rebuilt in 1938-'39 and in 1950 a new carillon was hung in it (Van Bergen firm). The church was put out of use in 1968 and then rebuilt in 1985 and '86 into shops and apartments. The wooden barrel vault is still clearly visible in the store on the first floor.
