The R.K. St. Urban Church in Nes aan de Amstel

betekenis & definitie

(Amsteldijk Zuid 144) is a substantial three-aisled basilical cross church with three-sided closed choir and a heavy celebration tower with balustrade, corner turrets and octagonal spire. This neo-Gothic church arose in 1889-91 to plans by J.Th.J. Cuypers (first independent work) to replace a barn church. The church has been restored in 1984-'85.

The interior is covered by wooden barrel vaults (middle nave and transept) and stone cross ribs on sandstone pillars. The communion bank (1860) comes from the barn church. The inventory taken by atelier Cuypers in neo-Gothic forms includes a main altar (1894), a pulpit (1904), baptismal font and the Stations of the Cross (1905). The organ was built by P.J. Adema (1893).

The neo-Gothic presbytery (Amsteldijk Zuid 145; circa 1890) is also designed by Cuypers. The cemetery has a cast iron cross (circa 1890) and a wrought iron gate in Louis XV style with the inscription 'Vreedenhof' (circa 1760).
