The R.K. St. Urban Church in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel

betekenis & definitie

(Achterdijk 1) is a three-aisled basilical cross-church with three-sided closed choir and a tower of four sections with frontal and needle spire. This monumental neo-Gothic church was erected in 1865-'67 to a design by P.J.H. Cuypers to replace a barn church from 1821.

The interior is covered by polychrome wooden barrel vaults. The inventory from the construction period includes a neo-Gothic high altar and a bluestone baptismal font (F.W. Mengelberg). The J.J. Vollebregt built organ (1871) has a by P.J.H. Cuypers designed neo-Gothic cabinet. The stained glass windows (1870) by F. Nicolas and the tile tableaux with Stations of the Cross (1901) were designed by J.Th.J. Cuypers. From the hand of P.J.H. Cuypers is the presbytery built in 1884 (Rondehoep Oost 31).
