The R.K. St.-Martinus church in Westwoud

betekenis & definitie

(at Dr. Nuijensstraat 80) is a three-aisled cross-church with semi-circular apse and a tower of three sections with wooden lantern and narrowed needle spire. To replace a barn church from 1773, this neoclassical church was built in 1849-'51 after design by Th. Molkenboer. In round arches of the façade, P.J. de Cuyper produced images. The church has been restored in 1983-'84.

The interior is covered by stucco cross ribbed vaults on ionic columns and pilasters with entablements. The rich neo-baroque inventory from the construction period includes confessional chairs, a communion bench, a neo-Baroque main altar (L. Veneman) and side altars, a few statues of saints, copper crowns and a carved pulpit (1865). There is also an organ built by L. Ypma (1863-'64) and a copper memorial plaque for doctor and historian W.J.F, who died in 1894 in Westwoud. Nuijens (1898, J.H. Brom).

At the church there is a presbytery (Dr. Nuijensstraat 80, 1863), a forem. the home of the foundation (Dr. Nuijensstraat 72, 1872) with a school, and the two-class R.K. lower St. Martin School (Dr. Nuijensstraat 112; 1930, S. W. Langius). The form. town hall in Westwoud (Dr. Nuijensstraat 13) is a sober neoclassical building from around 1860 with basement and beletage, a small roof rider and windows with lambrekijns. The adjacent forem. public primary school (circa 1875) was later converted into a fire station.
