The R.K. St. John's Basilica in Laren

betekenis & definitie

(Brink 31) is a three-aisled basilical cross-church with a three-sided closed choir with fellowship, a hefty eight-sided celebration dome and an imposing two-tower front with projecting entrance. This neo-Gothic church with expressionist elements was created in 1924-'25 to a design by W. te Riele and replaced a church from 1844 (extended 1882). In 1937 the church was elevated to 'basilica minor', because of the Holy Sacrament which - officially since 1886 - is conducted yearly in the St.-Jans procession to the St.-Janskerkhof.

The inventory includes a main altar from the construction period, stations of the crossroads of P.C. de Moor (1923-'28) and a bronze statue of St. John the Baptist (1933) made by L. Brom. The stained glass windows are from H. Bijvoet. The presbytery (Brink 33, circa 1924) is a sober expressionist design by H.F. Smit. At the place where the old R.K. St. John's Church from 1844 was built around 1925 a brick wall with memorial stones raised (at Brink 29).
