The R.K. St. John the Baptist Church in Westbeemster

betekenis & definitie

(Jisperweg 55), a basilic cross church, has a three-sided closed choir and a tower of four sections with frontals and needle spits. This neo-Gothic church arose in 1878-'79 to Y. Bijvoets design and has a striking printed light aisle with small windows. The interior with bundle pillars and stone cross ribbed vaults contains a richly carved neo-Gothic high altar and side altars from the construction period and one by the Gebr. Franssen built organ (1890).

The underlying graveyard with cast iron bar fencing includes the priest grave of S. den Elsen († 1890). The parsonage with neo-Gothic details (Jisperweg 56, circa 1880) was probably also designed by Bijvoets. The church replaced a barn that had been converted into a barn in 1752 behind the old presbytery (Jisperweg 57, circa 1860), now 'De Kerckhaen', a large building with a framed entrance.
