The Herv church in Ijpendam

betekenis & definitie

(Kerkstraat 19) is a one-aisled church with five-sided closed choir and a slender gable tower with narrowed spire. On the site of a church - burned down in 1640 - dedicated to St. Sebastian - a new church was erected in 1656. This was then partially renewed in 1713 (north façade) and 1850, and was given the current west façade with a façade in 1855. In the façade, a clock was cast by Gerhard Schimmel (1682).

The interior is covered by a barrel vault renewed in 1922 with draw beams.

In the choir closure the draw beams rest on wall posts with late-Gothic wooden scales (second half of the 15th century), originating from the old church. The inventory includes a pulpit, doophek and choir closure (all mid-17th century) and a men's bank (mid 18th century). Coming from the Herv. church in De Rijp is the office of N.A. Willembroek built organ (1728, transferred and modified 1855, J. van Nieuwkerk). Possibly in the 18th century, the two-day presbytery (Dorpsstraat 64).
