The castle in Schagen

betekenis & definitie

(Slotplein 4) consists of two round corner towers and a modern main building on a moated site. The castle was founded around 1394 by William of Bavaria and rebuilt by him in 1427.

Sieges followed in 1477 and 1517. In 1658 George van Cats owned the castle and he had it rebuilt and the gate tower demolished. In the 18th century the castle became the property of the Earl of Oultremont, who erected a two-storey building with middle ressault on the castle at the Markt around 1750: the house Vredelust (Markt 22), now Igesz Slot-hotel. After damage in 1799, the castle was abandoned by the count in 1821, after which the ruin was demolished in 1826 on both the 15th-century towers. These went to serve as a cachot and guardsman's house. The main building was rebuilt in old main form in 2001-'02.
