The admiralty gate in Hoorn

betekenis & definitie

(Kerkplein 23) was made in 1607 as entrance to the Admiralty of West Friesland, which had been established in the foremost settlement since 1586. Agnietenklooster (until 1795). After the demolition of the buildings for the construction in 1862-'65 of the City Hospital (now also demolished) only the Mannerist gate was retained (restored 1992). It is equipped with checkered ionic pilasters on postament and a band and roller work attachment with shell and root motifs. In the escutcheon coat of arms the letters P (ugno) P (ro) P (atria) (I fight for the fatherland).
