This dike village located to the north of Wormer on the east side of the Zaan was created in the 13th century near the Noorddam, which formed the link with West-Knollendam until 1635. The Herv. church (1862) was demolished around 1960. The form. Public primary school with teachers' home (Dorpsstraat 97, circa 1890), executed in austere neo-Renaissance style, is used as a village house.
Characteristic houses are the mansion Dorpsstraat 115 (circa 1890) and the villas Dorpsstraat 60 and 114 (circa 1905) in late Neo-Renaissance style and the plastered building Dorpsstraat 74 (circa 1910) with Art Nouveau details. The 18 th century grain warehouse Dorpsstraat 45, which now serves as a boathouse, was transferred from Jisp in 1890. Opened in 1874 and renovated in 1996, Alg. cemetery (opposite Dorpsstraat 1) has a 19th-century iron entrance gate flanked by bricked storage rooms (1930, M. Vries). The cemetery contains among others the grave of W. Groot († 1877), donor of the site. Right in front of the entrance is a wooden coach house (Dorpsstraat 1; 1905) for the hearse.
