IJmuiden (municipality of Velsen)

betekenis & definitie

Village, created as a result of the excavation of the dunes in the context of the construction of the North Sea Canal (1865-'76). On the spot, in 1873-77, two harbor dams were laid (extended 1957-'67). The canal was completely completed in 1883.

A.J. Bik and J.W. In 1875 Arnold let some houses built for the lock and harbor personnel and in 1877 they gave Y.P. Loots assignment to design a street plan for the western part of the current Oud-IJmuiden. In 1885 an expansion followed in an easterly direction. At the time of the opening of the Middensluis (1896), a start was also made on the development of land to the south-west of the existing buildings and in the direction of the (no longer existing) station (1883). For fishing, the Vissershaven was dug out (1896-'99, extended from 1914 to '20). On the basis of three consecutive plans, the area between 1901 and 1912 was built up. More to the east, a second residential core - initially De Heide and later Velseroord - was formed - which in 1926 was officially merged with Oud-IJmuiden to IJmuiden.

In the Second World War, IJmuiden was extensively strengthened, for which part of the old core was demolished. Furthermore, many houses were destroyed by bombing. The reconstruction has been carried out into urban plans by W.M. Dudok, H.A. Maaskant and W. van Tijen. In addition, the Haringhaven was relocated (1955, extended from 1960 to '62) and residential neighborhoods were created on both sides of the Lange Nieuwstraat. On the east side, the Plein 1945 has been decorated, intended as a new center with town hall, hotel and theater. Furthermore, IJmuiden has been expanded in a south-westerly direction.
