Village, originated in the 12th century at the dam at the mouth of the Dorre Ilp in the Purmer. The dam belonged to the Waterlandse Zeedijk, along which a tortuous ribbon development formed. The Ilpenstein castle, built after the reclamation of the Purmer (1622) northeast of the village, was demolished in 1872. After 1824 the village was wedged between the Noordhollands Kanaal (1824) and the Purmerringvaart. Ilpendam was expanded on the north side after the Second World War.
