Huizen

betekenis & definitie

Village in the Gooi, originated in the 10th century and first mentioned in 1382. An independent parish became Huizen in 1409. The Gooise esdorp character is north and east of the Herv. church still visible to the characteristic - apparently randomly situated - buildings on irregularly shaped buildings.

After the closure of the port of Naarden (1685), the importance of fishing became important for Huizen. In 1854 a private harbor was built according to plans of B.P.B. van Diggelen. Small fishermen's districts rose at the harbor. Sand extraction was also a source of income. The 17th century flour mill on the Molenberg was sold in 1917 to the Open Air Museum in Arnhem, after which this altitude was also canceled. In 1925 the lime sand factory 'Rijsbergen' was founded.

On the Crailo estate, which was purchased in 1902 by the 'Company to operate the construction sites Crailo' - on the border between Bussum and Huizen - the villa park Crailo was created according to a plan by P.H. Wattez. After the closure of the Zuiderzee (1932), the fishery in Huizen disappeared and a part of the port was demolished (1940). After the Second World War, industry was established near the port and the village was further expanded on the southern and eastern sides.
