Engels geschiedschrijver (Windsor 9 Juli 1777 - Pickhurst 21 Jan. 1859), oefende gedurende enige jaren te Londen de rechtspraktijk uit en leefde na 1812 vrijwel ambteloos. Zijn View of the state of Europe during the Middle Ages (1818) is een opmerkelijk overzicht van instellingen en cultuur van de (vooral late) middeleeuwen, zonder enige romantische verheerlijking.
