'De Lijnden' (Akerdijk 12) was built in 1843-'49 at the north end of the Hoofdvaart as one of the three steam pumping stations for the reclamation of the Haarlemmermeer. It consists of a tower-shaped round engine room with plastered battlements, two large side wings and a boiler room with cast iron windows and chimney, all executed in Willem II Gothic style designed by J.A. Beijerinck. The steam engine was replaced in 1930 by two electrically driven centrifugal pumps.
