Schools in Hoorn

betekenis & definitie

Built in 1883 to design by GJ. Hennink is the public primary school no. 2 (Muntstraat 7), a two-tier double school in neoclassical style.

The form. Rijks Hogere Burger School (J. Messchaertstraat 5), now Public School West-Friesland, is a U-shaped building in neo-Renaissance style, with central and angular risalites with gables with band and roller work. This school with caretaker's house (J.D. Pollstraat 2) was built in 1909-'10, according to plans by J.H.L. van Dorp supervised by Chief Government Architect J.A.W. Vrijman. On a corner lies the J. Superer with two-day M.U.L.O.-school no. 3 (Draafsingel 37) designed by J. Faber with neo-Gothic and expressionist details from 1915-'16. Faber also designed the public primary school (J. Messchaertstraat 1, 1922) - later Margrietschool - and the U.L.O.-school (J. Messchaertstraat 3, 1931-'32). Furthermore, there are the two-layer R.K. lower St Joseph school for boys (Achterom 19; 1922, S.B. van Sante) and R.K. lower Mariaschool for girls (Eikstraat 3; 1933, S. W. Langius) with four classes and a gymnasium.
