Schagerbrug (municipality of Zijpe)

betekenis & definitie

Cross-shaped village, founded shortly after the final dikes of the Zijpe and Hazepolder in 1596-'97. The buildings concentrated on the Grote Sloot and the Schagerweg at right angles to it. Despite a village fire in 1898, Schagerbrug grew into the capital of the municipality of Zijpe. The Stolvastavel bridge was replaced in 1936 by a drawbridge during the construction of the Stolpen-Schagen canal. After the Second World War Schagerbrug grew in the two eastern quadrants.
