Santpoort (municipality of Velsen)

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in the inner garden area of the Kennemerduinen near the 13th century castle Brederode. Santpoort is mentioned for the first time in 1388. The small settlement was located on an important north-south connection (Heerweg, now Rijksweg) at the meeting with the Slaperdijk.

In 1537 the Jan Gijzenvaart was dug out for sanding the inner garden area. For a long time the village consisted of bleachers and courtyards. After the reclamation of the Wijkermeer in 1865-'76, there were also buildings on the east side. In the area the flower bulb culture developed from 1870, for which the Jan Gijzenvaart was used until about 1930. In 1898, the Santpoort-Meerenberg station (now Santpoort-Zuid) was opened on the Haarlem-Alkmaar railway line (1876). Since then, Santpoort has developed into a commuter village. The villa building that was developed from 1876 to the west of the railway along the Vinkenbaan was continued on both sides of the track from around 1930 onwards. In 1926, the old Santpoort and the village Jan Gijzenvaart were officially merged and the two cores were called Santpoort-Noord and Santpoort-Zuid respectively.
