betekenis & definitie

(Grote Noord 15) [5] is a striking three-aisled basilica cross church with a five-sided closed choir and an eight-sided celebration tower with a dome. The western front has two small half-built towers with octagonal lanterns. This neo-Renaissance church, designed by A.C. Bleijs, replaced in 1879-82 a Maria chapel that had been burned down in 1877. The facade is at an angle to the church and the choir constructions together form a slanted facade.

The interior is covered by a stucco and is equipped with galleries. The celebration dome was supported in 1934 with concrete pillars. During the restoration of 1991-'93 (A. Hangelbroek-Gouwetor) the interior was stripped of the white color from about 1965. The inventory includes a wooden Pieta (late 15th century) and a by W.F. Krayenschot crafted pulpit (1756), both from the former hiding church. The organ was built by M. Maarschalkerweerd (1883). The paintings in the transept are by J. Dunselman and the stained glass windows were made in 1901 (choir), 1903 (transept) and 1914 (F. Nicolas & amp; Zn.).

The form. presbytery (Grote Noord 13, 1879-'81), in the same style as the church designed by Bleijs, was exchanged in 1910 for a new rectory with rationalistic elements (Grote Noord 17).
