Village, originated as peat reclamation in the Zeevang polder and first mentioned in 1212. From 1292 it was a free artisanal lordship, the rights of which were granted to Gerrit van Heemskerk. After the dry milling of the Beemster (1612) and the construction of the Zesstedenweg, a small village center formed in the 17th century along the Raadhuisstraat and at the intersection. The buildings were further densified around 1900, partly due to the construction of the Zaandam-Hoorn railway line in 1884-'85. After the Second World War the village was further expanded on the south side and near the station (stop elevated 1943).
