Markenbinnen (municipality of Graft-De Rijp)

betekenis & definitie

Village originated in the late Middle Ages as peat extraction from Uitgeest in a dense polder, the Marker and Oostwouderpolder, in the Starnmeer. Around 1644 the Markervaart, the western ring canal of the short-drained Starnmeer, was dug, which separated the Markerpolder from the Oostwouderpolder. Markenbinnen came to lie on the east side of this ring canal, in the southern tip of the Starnmeerpolder.
