Village, originated as a spirit settlement on a shoreline and first mentioned in 740. Around the church formed the Kerkbuurt. In the 18th century, a second development center, Dusseldorp, developed further to the north with a Catholic church. Jacobus du Peyrou bought the glory in 1732. The artisans lived at home Dampegeest (demolished 1846). After 1850, Limmen became an important center for flower bulb cultivation. Schoolmaster P. Boschman founded the 'Hortus Bulborum' in 1928 (Zuidkerkenlaan 23a). After the Second World War, the scattered development between the two village centers was further reduced.
