Village, originated at the end of the 12th century as peat extraction in the polder Zeevang. This elongated, later somewhat densely built, ribbon village got a station on the east side of the railway Zaandam-Hoorn (1884) and on the west side a fort of the Defense Line of Amsterdam (1889).
