Village, originated around 1200 as peat reclamation and in 1237 for the first time listed as 'Schoenedorp'. In the 13th century the village was divided into a Dutch and a Stichts part. Amsterdam bought in 1724 the delicious rights of the entire village. The construction of the fort Kudelstaart split the ribbon village in two, after which the center shifted from the north (Vrouwentroost) to the south. After the Second World War, the water recreation boomed, villas were built on the waterfront (Westeinderplassen) and more recently residential areas on the southeast side.
