Krommenie (municipality of Zaanstad)

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated as peat reclamation in the 11th century to the west of the current two-sided ribbon development along a 12th-century secondary reclamation axis (Noorder- en Zuiderhoofdstraat). At right angles there are roads to Wormerveer (Padlaan) and the former hamlet Busch (Heiligeweg).

Between the ribbon development and the Nauernasche Vaart dug in the 17th century for the drainage to the south of the Schermer, there were initially only a few industrial mills. In 1702 Krommenie was hit by a large village fire and in 1825 by a heavy flood. In the 19th century various industrial companies settled in Krommenie, including a tarpaulin factory and a linoleum factory. After the Second World War, large expansion areas on the west side were followed after the Second World War on the limited pre-war expansions (Noorderham and Zuiderham).
