Koog aan de Zaan (municipality of Zaanstad)

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in the early 16th century when residents from Westzaan settled on the west bank of the Zaan. Along the Lagedijk (Raadhuisstraat e.v.) there was a two-sided ribbon development. From around 1870, various factories and companies settled in the area outside the dykes along the Zaan and Koog aan de Zaan became an industrial village.

At right angles to the dike were some cross paths that led inland to industrial mills. Around 1870, the Stationsstraat was built to the station (1867). Since then, the area between the Zaan and the Amsterdam-Alkmaar railway line has been built up. After the Second World War, expansions followed to the west (Westerkoog).
