Village northwest of Kleine Sluis, founded in 1861 on the Zandvaart. When in 1912 it appeared that the poor sandy soil was suitable for flower bulb cultivation, many Catholic immigrants from the old bulb growing region settled here. A good example of a bulb barn from around 1925 is Zandvaart 192.
The R.K. church St. John Evangelist (Wijdenes Spaansweg 58; 1930-'31, St.P.J. de Vries), a wide one-aisled cross church with three-sided closed choir and an unedged tower with a brick spire, is executed in traditionalistic forms with neo-Gothic details. The L-shaped public primary school with attached teacher's home (Zandvaart 57) is in 1940 designed by D. Saal and W.A. Hoep built on the site of the Herv. church (1885).
