Godwin

betekenis & definitie

Godwin (William), een geestig Engelsch schrijver, geboren den 3den Maart 1756 te Wisbeach in het graafschap Cambridge, bezocht het seminarium der Dissenters te Hoxton bij Londen, werd in 1778 predikant, maar nam in 1782 zijn ontslag en vestigde zich te Londen, waar hij het volgende jaar eene ondergeschikte betrekking verkreeg bij het ministérie Grey, en den 7den April 1836 overleed. Hij schreef: „Sketches of history in six sermons (1784)”, — „The political events of the United Provinces”, — „Inquiry concerning political justice (1793, 2de uitgave 1798, 2 din)”, — alsmede de romans: „Caleb Williams (1794, 3 dln, 2de druk 1854)”, — „Saint-Leon 1799,4 din)”, — „Fleetwood (1805,3 din)”,— „Mandeville (1817, 3 din)”, — en „Cloudesley (1830, 3 din)”. Later kwam hij aan het hoofd van een boekhandel te Londen en schreef onder den pseudonym Edward Baldwin een aantal kinderwerkjes, — voorts nog: „History of the life and age of Geoffrey Chaucer (1803, 2 dln., 2de druk 1804, 4 dln)”, — „Lives of Edward and John Phillips, nephews and pupils of Milton (1815)”, — „Inquiry concerning the power of increase in the numbers of mankind (1821)”, — „History of the commonwealth of England from its commencement to the restoration of Charles II (1824—1828, 4 dln)”, — en „Thoughts on man, his nature, productions and discoveries (1831)”.
