Amerikaans psychiater, *28.8.1903 Wenen; van Oostenrijkse afkomst. Bettelheim belandde als joods student in een Duits concentratiekamp, maar kon in 1939 naar de VS emigreren.
In 1944 werd hij hoogleraar psychologie, in 1963 hoogleraar psychiatrie te Chicago. Bettelheim ontdekte nieuwe vormen van therapie voor psychotische kinderen. Werken: Dynamics of prejudice (1950), Symbolic wounds (1955), Dialogues with mothers (1962), The empty fortress (1967), The children of the dream (1969), Obsolete youth (1970), A home for the heart (1974), The uses of enchantment (1976), Surviving and other essays (1979).
