Village, originated in the Middle Ages as peat reclamation. In 1414, Winkel received town rights together with Oude and Nieuwe Niedorp, but these were purely administrative in nature. Shop was largely destroyed in 1519 and suffered from a village fire in 1649. A two-sided ribbon development formed between the Herv. church (northeast) and the town hall (southwest). In the 19th century, buildings on the Bosstraat followed and after the Second World War the village was extended on the southeast side.
