Wijk aan Zee (Beverwijk municipality)

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in a duinkom. In the 14th and 15th century, Wijk aan Zee had a lively trade on England, which came to an end during the Revolt. Then they focused on fishing and shellfish extraction. There was no harbor, however, the bombers were just on the beach.

After 1850 the fishing disappeared. In 1881 the Badhotel was opened (demolished around 1980) and afterwards the village developed into a seaside resort of modest size. From the end of the 19th century, some villa development arose on the south-west side of the village, and later on some new construction took place on the north-east side of the village. Striking is the village meadow surrounded by residential houses along the Zeestraat. This large oval meadow is the remainder of a common meadow of the village.
