Village, originated in the 12th century as peat reclamation. In 1414 the Stede Westwoude (Westwoud with Ooster- and Westerblokker and Binnenwijzend) received city rights, but these were purely administrative in nature. At the round cemetery ('t Laantje), at the site of the 14th-century village church that was demolished in 1876, the quarry axis (Oudijk) jumped in a south-easterly direction and then went as dr. Nuijensstraat in the direction of Hoogkarspel.
