Village, originated in the 11th century as peat extraction. The Nieuwlicht regulating monastery founded here in the 14th century was demolished in 1572-'73. After the discontinuation of the municipality of Blokker (1979), the elongated ribbon village was swallowed up by the expansion areas of Hoorn.
