The Velser Tunnel in Velsen

betekenis & definitie

(National road A22) is a combined car and rail tunnel. On the basis of plans from 1939 the tunnel construction began in 1941-'42. The completion followed in 1952-'57 with D. Roosenburg as an aesthetic adviser. Striking are the ventilation buildings on both sides of the North Sea Canal. Both have four high and four low columnar shafts, richly provided with prefab concrete decorative elements.
