The synagogue in Weesp

betekenis & definitie

(Nieuwstraat 5) is housed in a transversely placed two-storey building from 1840 with neoclassical details. The plastered left part was probably the residence of the cantor. After 1945, the synagogue area was used as a garage until 1986 (restoration entrance lot). Since the restoration in 1997 there is a (Jewish) cultural center and the O.J.E.C. (Consultative Body of the Jews and Christians in the Netherlands) established.

The R.K. St. Lawrence Church (Herengracht 16) is a three-aisled basilica cross church with three-sided closed choir and a tower of three sections with frontals and a high eight-sided needle spire. This neo-Gothic church arose in 1876-'77 after plans by Th. Asseler on the spot of a church from 1793. Striking are the rose windows at the transept and the round windows above the windows of the priest's choir. The tower, which was first raised to ship height, was completed in 1900 with two articulations and the spire designed by A.M. Bruning. The church has been restored in 1991-'93. The presbytery (Herengracht 17, 1883) has stepped gables in neo-Renaissance style.
