The Swiss Chalet in Santpoort

betekenis & definitie

(Wüstelaan 73), now a restaurant, was built in 1835-36 as a summer residence for banker A. van der Hoop, the then owner of the now vanished Spaarnberg estate on the other side of the road.

The reed-covered building, with a wooden leading edge on the street side with a porch above a white plastered substructure, is by J.D. Zocher jr. Designed. He is also responsible for the landscaping of the Spaarnberg park on both sides of the Wüstelaan, of which the pond near the chalet and the meandering water feature on the other side of the Wüstelaan at an apartment complex (1993) have been retained. There are also several stern pillars with the name Spaarnberg.
