The R.K. St. Nicholas Church in Lutjebroek

betekenis & definitie

(P.J. Jongstraat 45) is a three-aisled pseudobasilical church with three-sided closed choir and a slim tower of two sections with eight-sided needle striker.

This neo-Gothic church was erected in 1876-77 according to plans by P.J.H. Cuypers to replace a church from 1849. The eight-sided intersection with star vault and round pillars with frame capitals remains from the original structure as basilica central construction. During the execution, the construction plan was changed and the ship and transept were extended. Later Cuypers added two diagonally placed, rectangular chapels at the intersection. In 1924-'25 the church was moved to plans by J.Th.J. and P. Cuypers jr. The high spire was renewed in 1959 and in 1982 the church was restored. Against the north facade stands a monument (1917) for the pagan P.J. killed in 1867 in Montelibretti. Young.
