The foremost House-sitting Armen Orphanage in Hoorn

betekenis & definitie

(Veemarkt 6) is an elongated two-layer building with corner pilasters and a middle ressault. This orphanage was founded in 1685 with a gift from Cecilia de Jonge from Ellemeet in a bully dating from 1599. In 1738 the building was given the current façade.

After soldiers were quartered in 1795, the conversion to infantry barracks followed in 1817. In 1883-'84 the building was extended with a rear wing and arose according to plans of the genius in Den Helder on the Mosterdsteeg a sober neoclassical three-tiered alloys building (Mosterdsteeg 7, converted into apartments 1994-'98). After the removal of the garrison (1922), the old building was changed into a garage and the facade from 1738 was given a shop front (1926). In a recent renovation to bank building (1994) the original situation was reconstructed (A. Tol). In the courtyard, the carpenter's house dating from 1631 is inaugurated in 1820 St. Joseph's Guild (behind Dal 5, restored 1970). The guild room on the first floor has a beamed solarium with 17th-century ornamental painting and a mantelpiece with a painting of a conversion in 1790.
