The foreman's factory in Muiden

betekenis & definitie

(Kruitpad 13-15), located on a closed site west of the Muiden, was founded in 1703 as a gunpowder factory 'De Krijgsman'. In 1843, seven gunpowder factories merged into the United Buskruidfabrikatie, which in 1885-1922 was part of 'The joint Busworm makers of North Holland, Utrecht and Zeeland' (factories in Muiden and Ouderkerk).

After an explosion in 1883, the factory was largely renovated in 1883-'95 and extended to plans by J.F. Riveter for the production of black gunpowder and after 1900 of smokeless powder (shooting cotton). In 1922 the company was continued as NV Nederlandsche Springstoffenfabriek (NSF, later KNSF). The production in Muiden was discontinued in 2004. After the demolition of various factory buildings, an 18th century powder house (warehouse) and a hall and a warehouse from around 1883 have been preserved, as has the somewhat younger office and the laboratory on the Muidertrekvaart side. There are also the housing units Kruitpad 1-2 (1914) and 7-11 (1916). For the workers around 1915 the Bredius houses (Vechtkade 2-17 and 1-15) were built.
