Village, originated in the 11th century as peat extraction. Together with the connecting Benningbroek it got in 1414 as the 'Stede Sijbekarspel' - purely administrative technical - city rights. The buildings of the ribbon village were later somewhat compacted. After the Second World War, a small expansion area arose at the town hall.
