Village, originated in the 12th century as peat reclamation. In 1282 a battle took place at Schellinkhout between troops of Floris V and the West Frisians. In the middle of the north-south oriented extraction axis formed a modest village center with a church (first entry 1365). As a result of landfall, the church later came closer to the sea and the southern part of the Dorpsstraat shifted eastwards. To the north of the church, a small expansion area was created after the Second World War.
