Ransdorp (municipality of Amsterdam)

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in the 14th century as peat reclamation in the Bloemendaler Weeren and first mentioned in 1324.

Initially there were two parallel ribbon constructions (Bloemendalergouw and Liergouw) between which the current (second) village was created at right angles. The prosperity achieved in the 15th and 16th centuries widened after 1588. The Union of Waterland, founded in 1619, with Ransdorp as the main town, could not change that. Around 1700 the seafaring of the village was completely gone and replaced by agriculture. This also led to a decrease in the number of houses. The buildings concentrated along the Dorpsweg, with a small village center around the church. In 1921 the municipality of Ransdorp was annexed by Amsterdam, but this did not lead to further expansion. Ransdorp is a protected village.
