Village originated at the dike raised in the 12th century against the intrusive water of the Beemster and which also formed the southern part of the later West Frisian Omringdijk. From the dike, the so-called Veenhoop was mined in the 13th century to the north. The ditch running south of the dike was widened in the beginning of the 17th century into Beemsteruitwatering. This led to the development of a one-sided ribbon village with later some condensation of the buildings around the church.
