Landsmeer

betekenis & definitie

Village, originated in the 12th century as peat extraction at a waterway and road.

This village, which was first mentioned in 1326, became an elongated two-sided ribbon village (Zuideinde-Dorpsstraat-Noordeinde). The decline in the acreage of grassland by peat removal led to the fact that after 1860 the company started to concentrate on poultry farming. It was not until after 1900 that the village got construction on the Van Beekstraat at the perpendicular to the reclamation axis. From 1920 the road closures were filled in and after the Second World War a land consolidation followed. Then the village was expanded and Landsmeer became a commuter village in Amsterdam.
