Village, originated in the Middle Ages as peat reclamation. In 1414, Hoogwoud received city rights, but these were purely administrative in nature. Along the Burg. Hoogenboomlaan formed a two-sided ribbon development and in the 19th century buildings followed the Herenweg towards the R.K. church. After the Second World War Hoogwoud was extended in a southerly direction.
