Characteristic for Marken is the division into neighborhoods on mounds or yards. The low and the raised one-room dwellings can be distinguished on the construction site and the houses constructed partly or entirely on piles at the edge or outside the yard. The latter came about when the mounds were crammed. The buildings with mainly free-standing wooden buildings with green or black painted planking form a picturesque whole. Painted white are the window frames and the eaves with (scalloped) wind springs and broker. Although the appearance has changed little, many houses have been renovated, internally rebuilt or merged.
