Around 1575 Monnickendam received plans for Adriaen Anthonisz fortifications in the form of four bastions and a projecting courtine. The existing gates with subsequent wall work were retained for the time being, but the rest of the city wall was largely demolished. Only a remnant of the 15th-century city wall is present at Niesenoortsburgwal 38. The ramparts, canals and various strongholds were excavated in the 19th century, but still largely recognizable at the Niesenoortburgwal, Zuidervesting, Bolwerk and Noordervesting.
