methylalcohol, houtgeest, CH3 . OH; zeer giftige, met bleekblauwe vlam brandende, heldere vloeistof, S.G. 0.810; smeltpunt-970 C; kookpunt 64,7° C. Vroeger bereid uit beukenhout, thans uit watergas bij temp. van ca 400° C en een druk van ca 200 atmosfeer.
Gebruikt als motorbrandstof, als middel om aethylalcohol te denatureren; grondstof voor formaldehyde en anilinekleurstoffen.
